The biography of the educational institution begins
in 1900. Then the seven-year technical college was created in the town of
Alexandrovsk (since 1924 - Zaporizhzhya). It prepared experts with the technical
qualification. The director of the school was an experienced engineer and
teacher D.M. Podderyogin, who headed it for18 years. The main buildings were built simultaneously with the educational work. The main three-storied building, workshops, the gymnastic hall, and apartments for employees were erected very soon. The shop of production, the audiences, physical and mechanical cabinets, laboratories, conference hall were located in the educational building. Well arranged studies, equipped workshops of the faculties: joiner's, model, mechanical, metal worker's, blacksmith's, foundry - enabled the college staff to turn out qualified technical and mechanical engineers. At the end of the 1st decade 240 students were studying in the college at the same time. Its graduates worked successfully at the machine-building enterprises, and this fact favoured the promotion of the college's authority and its recognition. It was considered as one of the best colleges not only in Ukraine, but also in Europe. |

In 1930 the technical college was transformed
into the Institute of Agricultural Machine Building which trained engineers
on four majors: tractor and agricultural engineering, metal processing and
founding. During 10 years before the Great Patriotic War 782 engineers received
their diplomas here. They worked further at Zaporizhzhya plants - the Combine
Plant, the Engine Building Plant and others. The graduates of those years
thought well of their tutors - Ivlev Ì.Ì., Unger L.À., Zhurbitsky V.Î.,
senior lecturers - Gurvych Î.I., Dydenko Î.G., Martynenko V.V., Natapov
B.S., Isakov L.G., Yakovenko G.Î.
In hard years of war more than 500 students and tutors of the higher educational establishment went to the front, 52 studied in artillery academy named after Dzerzhynsky F.E., 30 students completed an intensive course of the academy of armoured forces. More than 300 students and tutors were honored with awards and medals for heroism and courage on the fronts. More than 50 of our warriors never came back home from the war: the officers - artillerymen Grigory Bobrov and Mykola Ivanchenko, the pilot - fighter Olexy Kozachkov, the soldiers Viktor Bozhko and Anatoly Artyuh... In 1941 the institute was evacuated to the city of Barnaul in Altay land, and continued to train experts for national economy. And later on the basis of the institute the Altay Polytechnic Institute was established. After the liberation of Zaporizhzhya from fascists the Zaporizhzhya Automechanical Institute was arranged in 1944 and in three years it became Zaporizhzhya Agricultural Machine Building Institute, and in 1955 it was renamed into Machine Building Institute. In 1980 the Institute was awarded to the order "The Sign of Honour" for its large work on training specialists for national economy. From 1930 till 1995 the higher educational establishment has prepared over 41 thousand engineers, 825 of whom are from foreign countries. A sufficient contribution into development of the aviation industry was made by the graduate of the Institute, the former director of IN "Motorobudivnyk", the Hero of the Socialist Work, doctor of engineering science, Professor V.I.Omelchenko. Taking into account the sufficient contribution of the Institute into the preparation of engineers for Zaporizhzhya region, and also its high level of the scientific and pedagogical potential, material and technical base, according to the decree of the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers of April 20, 1994 the Technical University was established on the basis of the Machine Building Institute. |

the region. The University prepares experts at 10 faculties of the full-time
and the extra-mural training: Machine Building, Transport, Physical Engineering,
Electrical Engineering, Radio Engineering, Information and Computer Technics,
Economics and Management, Humanities, Distance Education, Post-Diploma Education. The preparation of the future entrants for entering and further studies at the University is held at the Preparatory Faculty. The retraining in the fields of computers and automation systems, and economics and management is carried out by the Post-Diploma Faculty. 21 of 43 chairs of the University turn out specialists on 31 majors of the machine building, metallurgical, radio and electrical engineering, economic and computer profiles. There is also Military Chair where the reserve officers are trained simultaneously with the full-time training. The high level of experts training is reached due to the usage of the advanced methods in the educational process: problem lectures, business games, industrial situations, projection and video devices, computer classes on the basis of personal computers. With the purpose of implementation of new information computer technologies in the educational process and scientific researches an information and computer network was created on the basis of modern technics and software. Currently the University has more than 9000 students including 5800 full-time students. The educational process is carried out by 670 lecturers, 460 of whom have scientific degrees and scientific ranks, including 47 professors, doctors of sciences, 24 are members and correspondents of National Academies of Ukraine of different branches, 11 Honored Scientists, Honored Educational Workers, winners of the State Prizes. The University is headed by the rector, doctor of engineering science Belikov S.B. The University has 9 training and laboratory buildings, 5 student's hostels of 2300 places, including the one for families; library with more than 800000 editions of scientific and technical literature; a printing house equipped with a computer publishing complex, modern copying equipment. 2 sports camps ("Pine Forest" on the bank of the Dnieper and "Altagir" on the Azov seaside) are to the service of teachers, students and employees of the University.
